While daydreaming about establishing Fern x Flow as a soy candle company, we knew we wanted to create a small business that we'd want to support had it been someone else's venture. We wanted to start a company that, first and foremost, thought of the environmental impact when creating/selling a product, but also one that uses responsibly sourced and eco-friendly materials
Our commitment to the environment is made evident through business decisions including, materials, products, shipping + delivery options and more. We wanted to take it a step further, which is why we wanted to incorporate donating a portion of sales to important environmental causes and organizations as part of our overall mission.
Ultimately, we decided that we would donate 5% of all sales to organizations whose own missions are to help protect and maintain the natural world around us. More specifically, this could include organizations who help protect land including, national parks, public and private spaces, waterways, among other land and water bodies, but also the plant and animal life that live within these spaces.
We decided the month following the previous sales quarter (3 months prior) we would announce the total amount of money being donated, and which organization would benefit from the 5% of total sales in that given period. Thanks to all of our incredible customers, we just recently, we made our very first donation.
On Friday, January 22, we made our first donation, totaling $100, to MassWildlife's Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program. This donation was 5% of the total sales made throughout the entire last quarter (October - December) of 2020.
We chose MassWildlife as the first beneficiary, because we've not only enjoyed reading the 'Massachusetts Wildlife Magazine' for many years but also because we also appreciate all the incredible conservation work they provide throughout the entire state of Massachusetts.
“MassWildlife’s mission is the conservation of all the fish and wildlife resources of the Commonwealth, including endangered plants and animals, for the benefit of everyone who lives in or visits our great state.”
With that in mind, we are so excited to be able to make this our first donation and support their ongoing efforts. Our planet needs as many allies as it can get to help preserve and protect our air, land, water and all of our natural resources. We have one planet, and we should all work to make it a cleaner and greener space for all.
Our next donation will be announced in April 2021.
