As many of you know, part of our mission is to give back, in different ways, to the environment. One of those is donating 5% of our total sales to eco-friendly organizations who help protect and maintain the natural world around us.
This month marks the time for us to make another donation (our third in total) from all second-quarter sales of 2021. By far, this has been the biggest sales quarter for us especially as we've started doing pop-ups and local farmers' markets.
Taking into consideration all online sales, in-person sales, and wholesale orders from April 1 - June 30, our sales totaled $4120! This means, because of all of our customers we're able to donate $206 to another incredible organization! To make this donation even better, it’s been matched - meaning our contributions have been doubled!
With that being said, we'd like to introduce you to Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Some of you may recognize the name Sea Shepherd from the Netflix documentary, Seaspiracy, which explores the global fishing industry, challenges ideas of sustainable fishing and how human actions cause damage to the environment.
This time around, we wanted to choose an organization who focused on protecting the oceans. After watching the documentary, we realized even further just how important the health of our oceans are to the overall environment. And what better organization to make a donation to than one who aggressively helps protect the world's waters.
In the documentary, Sea Shepherd can be seen intercepting illegal fishing boats who deliberately ignore national and international fishing laws. Part of their mission is to use direct action to enforce laws protecting the oceans.
As stated on their website; their mission is to "defend, conserve, and protect our ocean." In greater detail, they further state,
"Sea Shepherd is an international, non-profit marine conservation organization that engages in direct action campaigns to defend wildlife and conserve and protect the world’s oceans from illegal exploitation and environmental destruction."
As to why they choose to fight, their website details that,
"Our ocean and its inhabitants are dying from overfishing and habitat destruction. Poachers plunder marine life sanctuaries with impunity, and illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing goes unchecked in the high seas far from public scrutiny."
Sea Shepherd has been helping to defend marine wildlife and its biodiversity through the enforcement of law along with the help of national authorities since 1977. We are so excited to make a donation to this organization and help them continue their important work. Thank you to all of our customers for making this donation happen!
